The Dock

Now before we continue with what I want to show you from Windows 7 today, I want to introduce you to the dock of Mac OS X first.

For those not familiar with Mac OS X… the dock is something similar to the taskbar of Windows, but there are also huge differences. Basically, it’s a sidebar with all the running apps and favorite apps (that might not be running currently).

As you can see, there are little dots under the apps that are running and those without dots are just apps that are kept in the dock for easy access. Having a running app does not mean there is a open window somewhere for this app, which is different from Windows’ concept. I could close iTunes’ window, but the music would continue to play as long as I don’t quit the app, in which case the little dot under the iTunes icon would disappear.

If I right-click the icon in the dock (yes, in Mac OS X you can perform right-clicks), a pop-up menu appears, with certain useful option. As you can see, the bottom half of those options are shared by all apps. “Keep in Dock” makes the icon stay in the dock even when you quit the app.

Of course you can also undo this, and remove the app from the dock.

currently i’m using vista and i can’t say i’m satisfied with the performance. maybe i’ll switch to 7 when it’s final, heard some good comments about it (people even said that it runs games better than xp? :D). also, i really like the iconized taskbar that i googled for something similar. found this: windows7-like iconized taskbar
it really saves a lot of space :P

It’s the hate/love relationship I have with windows. Makes something ‘similiar’ to other programs and thinks they can make it better.

Sometimes it works, but yeah Vista is causing too much trouble.

*sigh* Do they usually have to steal a lot of ideas from Apple? It seems they’ve been doing this from the start. Seems really sad. It might force me to get a Mac next time.

So in other words, it’s a tray icon, but on the left. I’m fine as long as the keep taskbar items the same with live thumbnails.
Don’t know why all the vista hate. There’s some compatibility issues but you should just get a new computer with a new operating system. My laptops running vista work great, equivalent to XP in load times etc but more efficient. The new search and folder browsing are neat once you realise instead of “up” you click on the previous folder in the pathname.
Anyway, if windows 7 is like vista but no UAC it’ll be perfect and by then I’ll be ready to build a new computer.
