Windows 7 reinvents the dock

Windows 7 taskbar

Let’s go back to Windows 7.

The start menu is there, two more icons which looks like quick launch, tray icons and clock on the right. This is what it looks like right after logging in. The little strip on the far right next to the clock minimizes all windows and shows the desktop.

When I open the control panel, nothing unfamiliar comes up.

Surprising is though, that we just have a large icon representing the window, instead of a bar like it has been ever since Windows 95.

Hovering over the bar discloses a description.

hint

A right-click shows the pop-up menu.

pin

“Pin this program to taskbar” … And yes, after closing the window and effectively quitting the program, the icon is still there.

notrunning

Remove using right-click again.

Sometimes, it also contains some extra features. In case of a running Internet Explorer:

I will be staying with Mac OS X as my main operating system though :P

currently i’m using vista and i can’t say i’m satisfied with the performance. maybe i’ll switch to 7 when it’s final, heard some good comments about it (people even said that it runs games better than xp? :D). also, i really like the iconized taskbar that i googled for something similar. found this: windows7-like iconized taskbar
it really saves a lot of space :P

It’s the hate/love relationship I have with windows. Makes something ‘similiar’ to other programs and thinks they can make it better.

Sometimes it works, but yeah Vista is causing too much trouble.

*sigh* Do they usually have to steal a lot of ideas from Apple? It seems they’ve been doing this from the start. Seems really sad. It might force me to get a Mac next time.

So in other words, it’s a tray icon, but on the left. I’m fine as long as the keep taskbar items the same with live thumbnails.
Don’t know why all the vista hate. There’s some compatibility issues but you should just get a new computer with a new operating system. My laptops running vista work great, equivalent to XP in load times etc but more efficient. The new search and folder browsing are neat once you realise instead of “up” you click on the previous folder in the pathname.
Anyway, if windows 7 is like vista but no UAC it’ll be perfect and by then I’ll be ready to build a new computer.
