We’re recruiting officially, a rare occurrence.
Who are we? We’re a team who cares of practicality and about the team itself. First we think about how to make our job easier so we can enjoy more free time, and later we think about scanlating those manga. We think out of the box and like to put the team over the job.
As we have a really deep sense of the team, our first rule is “being part of FoOlRulez, and only FoOlRulez”. We don’t accept people working for other teams. I could sum it up with “jealously”. I could add there’s enough work at FoOls that you won’t have time for other teams. As second rule, make sure you understand English well enough. We can’t talk with you if you can’t talk it!

[I want to be a translator]
The work of a translator is split in two parts:
1) Translating the manga (SFX too, there’s a dictionary for that!)
2) Control corrections and answer questions from proofreaders
We need people proficient in Japanese and English. Not a grammar nazi, but not even a person who would ruin the translation because not good enough in English. It’s a great pro having some anime otaku culture and knowledge of Japanese culture, but not absolutely necessary.
We won’t accept text translated by the “sounding”, and justified by saying “I don’t like literal translation”. What’s written is what we want, and later we’ll soften the corners if needed. Remember we’re not artists, but just middlemen, and that we must deliver accuracy of translation in particular.
The test will consist in translating a whole chapter of a monthly manga we translated in the past.
[I want to be a proofreader]
First, you should know English well, that goes without saying. Japanese knowledge helps, but is anything but a requirement. You should also be aware that this will take quite some time, so if you don’t have the dedication, please do not apply either. And lastly, more than just mere knowledge of English, you will need to have an eye for detail and be able to spot that single typo in those hundreds of words.
If you think you got what it takes, then by all means send Woxxy a mail/PM in the forum.
The next step will be a proofreading test. You may wonder why we bother with that, but one good proofreader is easily more valuable than 10 merely average ones.
The test will consist of 4 translated, but not yet edited chapters and one chapter that has been fully edited. This might sound much, but keep in mind that you’ll have all the time necessary to finish. Not to mention that this isn’t far from what you’ll be doing every week anyway. The chapters themselves have plenty of things to look out for, from typos to questionable grammar to other little surprises. This goes doubly so for the edited chapter.
With all that said, I hope you are still interested in undertaking the challenge.
[I want to be an editor]
An editor is the person who takes care of applying the translation on the images. This means this person must clean, redraw all the SFX possible and put the translation in the bubbles. He must take care of the graphics through all the process, and make sure the editing quality is on par (eventually asking for advice if not sure or unable to do something).
We want people experienced in Photoshop (GIMP is not good, and who uses it never edited seriously) and possibly with a tablet. You must be good with redrawing, and will have to clean and redraw most of SFX.
You won’t need to pass any test if you edited manga in past. I’ll check what you’ve done before. Else, I will give you a test with few pages to edit with precise instructions in order to follow our default style. These will be redraw-heavy, to the point I won’t ask perfect editing. But do your best!
[I'd like to help, but I can't do any of this]
Well… I always have some extra needs. I’d like someone who’d blog interesting stuff frequently, while we don’t have releases to publish. Of course, someone who is really proficient at English and is quite an otaku. We have some 1100 users a day in average, it’s quite a good number of viewers for your posts. But hey, I am not sure if this is even a good idea. Your turn to make me change my mind for the positive!
Else, you should just be human, and join the forums actively or just keep on visiting us. Some love can always help us.
If possible, retweet this post with the button up there, so we can reach more readers!
If you can fullfill the requirements (or at least part of them), make sure you mail us at:
recruiting@foolrulez.org
Please, mail to this address, else I’ll have problems sorting out all the mail and your application might be lost! Don’t use the forum PMs or any other mail.
I’m being replaced!
:’(
javascript:openThisShit, huh?
I didn’t hide the idiocy well enough I guess.
For some reason, I can’t open any of the links.
No idea what was wrong, I just re-saved the page and now it works.
I don’t want to do anything, but I still want +o in the IRC.
Me too.
I want the +0.
I think after all these years of me bein there I’ve earned it!!! sure i may have effed up a couple times back when i had +h BUT I AM A CHANGED MAN
IF I CAN’T HAVE IT, NEITHER CAN YOU.
I’d like to help. I’ve sent off an email.
I’ll do my best to answer all the mails as fast as possible. Believe me, I have to deal several dozens of mails a day whenever we recruit.
It’s not that unusual to receive so many emails for recruitment drives. I’d like to think us readers are by and large a fairly caring and sympathetic bunch and would go to great lengths to see you succeed.
Mailed.
hew wox, feel free to through any extras in aquastar’s direction
;_; short and staff and no one ever applys
I wouldn’t mind blogging. How much blogging do you expect us to do?
Depends on what you’re blogging about. Woxxy told me to make a minimum of five blog posts a month, all of which had to receive at least 26 POSITIVE comments.
I couldn’t do it, and my blogging rights were taken away. It’s tough.
Oh yeah, and they had to be humorous T_T
i think i’ll give a try at …proofreading?
I’ll*
Proofreading is srs bsns.
Trust me man.
I missed 3 mistakes and the rest of the day was spent sobbing while Z-Virus corrected me.
…and that’s how I became an editor.
Hmmm. Just started Japanese 101 last night. We learned how to write あ-そ. Can I be a translator? PUWEEZE?!!
