Today we will show you how groups are related to each other. With a simple picture.

First thing you might have asked yourself, is who is the girl in the picture. Well, that’s guorbatschow while doing SCIENCE, mind you.

What’s this graphic about?
This is how the channels on IRC.irchighway.net are related. In other words, how scanlation groups are related with each other. Channels that share admins, operators or half-operators are connected by an edge.

(Just click on it to zoom – Internet Explorer users won’t see it)

How to read:

Not all connections are shown. Some are omitted to keep the graph more clear.

The color intensity of the nodes are a hint on the the actual amount of shared operators.

The node size correlates to the amount of users in that channel.

Black connections are shared operators, gray connections are shared half-ops.

Thicker connections signify multiple shared operators.

If your channel is not in the graph, well… bad luck, the graphic is not exhaustive.

NOTICE: As the person who makes the accusation over the link I provided is not trustable, I'd like you to take this piece of news with a grain of salt.

NOTICE: As the person who makes the accusation over the link I provided is not trustable, I’d like you to take this piece of news with a grain of salt.

As seen on mangaupdates there was an answer by a person who would be the admin from MangaHelpers. This is as much believable as the original message, as we can’t ensure that the person who posted is the admin itself.

I’d like to believe that he is actually the admin though.

Here’s the post I wrote yesterday, untouched. I’ll leave it as it is for not being lame.

Do you remember some months ago, in September, how we’ve made a post about MangaHelpers? It was about MH wanting to make scanlation “legal” through getting rights by VIZ Media to sell fanmade scanlations. The idea was basically paying little amounts to scanlators, so MH would become a shop to buy translations made by fans. There’s still all the material available if you want to check it out, within the manga reader.

First, some good music: Triangular, sung by Rin Kagamine. Be ready for this addicting song. If you got a nicovideo account, listen to this in a higher quality here.

An obvious uproar, and negative comments against MH were shed, as such an action would be changing the whole scanlation scene at its roots, intimidating a large number of groups, bringing money in a ecosystem that doesn’t need money to exist. And that wouldn’t work if much money was to be spent by the readers. In the end it was just a plan to make MH owners richer, despite the readers and their community in particular.

Well, I found more fresh news while browsing randomly websites that were linking to FoOls. I can’t say anything for sure regarding the person who shared this, as this person posted in various forums to “share” this info. There are few chances that this news might be just a troll. Just as much as past time though.

Here’s the link to what I’ve found and is what the person who leaked the information the first time said:

[The post in the link asked to share, I hope I am allowed to steal this pic]

Kodansha would be now the group acquiring MangaHelpers itself. It’s the same Kodansha who C&D’d MangaHelpers about their manga in that same September 2009. Maybe it’s even more interesting that Kodansha would be persecuting groups not quitting scanlating their manga “legally”. Which is indeed a pretty heavy statement, as this would be not just a friendly “C&D”. But still, the plan would be to change MangaHelpers in a shop, just like last time.

As a member of a scanlation group I would actually worry about how the environment in which we “play” would change. Truthfully, all scanlators (98% of us) work completely for free, if not even lose money into it. The true money makers are websites that store loads of work made for free, while we just live with it, losing most of the glory. And still, most of the people do it both for the fun of it and for the sense of contribution to the scanlation scene, don’t care much about these lucrative websites .

What MH seems unaware of (or rather, doesn’t care about) is that by doing that they will destroy this ecosystem. Because, truly, do you think people would read stuff randomly like people do nowadays? I am quite sure most people first will enjoy a whole series before buying the manga “in order to possess it and contribute” (heck, I do it too), and that way the publishers will make moar money as well, without even needing to sell licenses.

Money doesn’t belong in scanlation, despite what few black sheep says. Indeed there are people in scanlation groups who think they deserve being paid, but let’s remind them: the material we work on is not ours. So that’s why you shouldn’t moan for more money than for what you need for your server (and don’t go buy a 400 € a month server, kids!) and for the RAWs you need. And you should get that money through ADs on your blogs and some donations. Remember also that you’re much more prosecutable if you earn money off it.

As that post in a forum calls: keep your eyes open, because such a change at MangaHelpers might hurt the scanlation scene. In case, make your voice sound.

It’s not USA laws censoring lolis (and more) in those big websites, it’s Google Adsense

Have you seen the latest developments in websites like mangafox, onemanga and so on? Let's put some light where thing became confused.

There is always a majority of bullshit news about loli bans. Always just to get people raging and get page-views for their own websites.

Indeed, Australia banned small breasted girls in porn like two months ago or less, and that’s just an example about how law is always ruled by moralists and by people who wants to pass as a moralist to get votes. It’s no secret that modern states always had the problem for which referendums are ridiculously piloted to get to the people’s heart rather than to the people’s rationality.

But, no new laws have come out in USA, yet, all at once, all these websites are cleaning all the mature content. Why?

Because Adsense, the internet advertising company by Google, is what makes the people leeching off our manga ridiculously rich. Google Adsense lives upon USA rules, and one of the points in their terms is that

“The content of the website must be viewable also by kids”

which makes all of that “material” we deal with, that is obviously meant for mature public, banned from the Adsense point of view. In fact, these websites are being blocked by Adsense and now they are sulking to get their money-flow from Google back.

I’m not going to say a lie: I don’t care in the least for the owners of those websites. They are after all not only leeching over us, but also stealing us page-views, which is what pays our pricey manga RAWs and our servers.

You could see mangaupdates (that aren’t leechers, so I care) doing the right thing: ask first the community if they should remove those mature titles from their database with a poll. In case the major number of people was to say that it’s alright to remove them, they most likely would be able to get back their Google Adsense account. But, as it seems, they will just keep going as the users like, which is the smart thing to do, both morally and for their pockets. Nobody likes websites with censoring.

But, the rest? Just look at how MangaFox and OneManga and many others now will just go and remove what Google thinks is wrong in order to keep their money flowing in their pockets as fast as possible. This is how much these websites care about our manga culture. Hope you like it, guys.

What if the FoOlRulez scanlated manga will be removed from those websites? Just come directly on our website. We can release that adult stuff, any time, without censoring.

I’m not, but I sure would like to say it. Even more if it was on a cool chat like the original one. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I inform you that now my your dreams have come true, thanks to this (and thanks to our magical prodigy Woxxy). Go on and start chatting freely, folks, as you’re no more bound to the restrictions of Twitter (there is work on an IRC version in progress, but it won’t be completely functional for a while)!

Dollars Chat

What does it have to do with me? Well, I made the cool avatars that you’re already (if you’re not, get moving) using. But this wasn’t enough, so we though we’re going to give you even more.
*APPLAUSE*

We are going to make more (yes, more) cool avatars and you are going to choose what’s next. Your favorite anime waifu? The most badass video game character? The dog-belonging-to-the-secondary-character-that-was-in-one-chapter-

of-that-one-manga-you-don’t-remember-the-name-of-but-probably-dealt-with-high-school-students? Just post your suggestions in the comments and we will check them and see if they’re viable to become Durarara-like avatars. Please note that the subject must not be too complex (not because I’m too lazy, but because the graphic style isn’t suitable for complex designs). Also note that the chat is still in sort-of-beta, so there may be bugs or or traits to be improved. Enough chitchatting (did you get the pun? :D), we want you to comments, so post feedback about the chat (what is missing and what could be improved), suggestions about the next avatars to come and your opinion on this project. Thanks for the attention.

AWESOME CLIENT.

It’s as similar as I could make it in a short timespan to the original one. It was a real pain to build it in truth, but the result is definitely amazing.

You can go using it directly here.

To win, all you need is a twitter account.

This is not an April FoOls. Understand that this is a special day for us. Also, we wouldn’t make an april fools joke span for four days.

You know twitter? That website lets you send messages to the public. So here’s the deal.

Just tweet this: “RT @woxxy Retweet this or follow the rules http://foolz.us/ha and you can win a translated #manga chapter of your choice! #FoOlRulez”

It works like this: If you just retweet, your name gets added once. If you follow me, you get added twice. If you click the button under here, you get added thrice (and automatically retweet and add me)!

– it’s the old FoOlRulez connect button

The game ends on the 4th of April, 23:59 GMT+1 (midnight). On April the 5th 23.00 GMT+1 we will extract the winner our IRC channel.

Which manga you can pick? Here’s the limits:
- Series must be inactive (not scanlated) for more than 90 days
- It mustn’t contain explicit content (No Yaoi/Yuri/Hentai)
- Requester must provide us the RAW in a ZIP
- Japanese or Chinese only
- The RAW must be of a decent quality
- It will released under FoOlRulez and requester will be credited as commissioner
- Give us two (maybe three) weeks to complete our job
- Not more than 42 pages, a few more if it’s a one-shot

If you have any question, just make a comment in this thread!

Finally I completed the core system of our image board system, to browse /FoOl/ and 4chan. Please, try it out.

This is the so named “secret project” I have been working on for past two months.

The plan started when our team mate guorbatschow asked me to make an interface for iPhone/cellphones for 4chan, while he’d do the engine.

But, since I was at it, I decided to make first a desktop version, then a iPhone version out of it. That was “ajax4chan” the first version of a real time 4chan browser. After one month, the JavaScript powered page was ready, with a little flaw: it couldn’t post on 4chan. It was using foolrulez.org server to retrieve data from 4chan, so we were, basically, a proxy. Not satisfied, I decided to continue the project straight to the second version, without ever releasing the first version officially. This is when I thought that, since I am learning Java, I might as well put that language in the project.

This is how “java4chan” was born, almost identical for interface to “ajax4chan” but completely rewritten to the core, that now gets downloaded to your browser, instead of staying on foolrulez.org. Took another month to build it, as it has to emulate a browser connecting to 4chan to be able to post. In the end, against all chances, I got it to work.

So I named it FoOlChan TestUnit01.00.

Features:

Never change page. It doesn’t ever need reloading.

Save threads you’re interested in, and you will get noticed when there are new posts in them. Once a thread goes 404, you won’t lose the already saved posts.

Images open in the same panel, after being cached. You can browse 4chan while you wait for images to be loaded. They’ll show up once they’re ready.

Image basket in which you can save images to view later. Meanwhile, they will get loaded.

Save images directly on Hard Disk in one click after selecting the folder

New posts in a thread are highlighted in green.

Twitter system to upload images and post them into your twitter account.

Complete reply/new thread system, without reloading the page.

Open quotes by clicking on the red links, instead of scrolling to the post like on imageboards.

Retrieves quotes from remote threads.

Much faster than any JavaScript system, as it processes data in a JavaVirtualMachine.

And a lot more that would make this list too long.

Said this, FoOlChan is now in the usual place where it always has been: just click on the navigation button, and go to FoOlChan.

It won’t work on Internet Explorer, and Opera will take around 30 seconds to load the JavaVirtualMachine.

For the iPhone/cellphones version, can get there by writing the short url http://foolz.us/m on your cellphone. If your cellphone is good enough, it will work. As for now, it doesn’t work on some S60 like the N95, but I’ll try finding the reason.
