Also if you reddit, reddit is fun is the app to use and if you use steam chat a lot you can get the steam app just make sure to quit the application when you're done or it'll run in the background and eat battery

also for Google play its for streaming music and eats up data depressingly fast but it's nice because it automatically syncs with your Google Music which can automatically sync whenever you get new music depending on your settings I have it set to sync whenever I add songs to iTunes

I have an s3 so I imagine out widgets and stuff are similar so I highly recommend use of quick contact actions so you just hit an icon to go straight to Texting someone.

As for apps:

Screen filter - for quick easy dimming you can also have a shortcut one that goes to a set dim % with a touch

Silent mode - widget for quick toggle from sound to vibrate to silent without actually having to adjust volume

SwiftKey keyboard - is pretty cool if you don't like the default

Handscent - if you don't like default messenger, I don't know what android version you're running but I remember I hated gingerbread's default

Chrome - just cuz... Synced pages are nice

Google Music & Google drive - if you don't have them go check them out, you need stuff set up on your computer first

Smartglass- if you have an xbox its pretty cool to use your phone as a remote for like Netflix and stuff

Gameboid - no longer on the market is think but you can Google the apk to install and go download gba roms and play to your whimsy

Also if you want paid apps for free generally you can Google the apk and get it for free with relative ease
