Kageryuu:
Edit: Part 2 of the list, strategy and RPG visual novels here:

Strategy game - visual novels:

Spoiler for Hiden: Aselia the Eternal: Turnbased strategy game/SRPG/VN crossover.
(Eien no Aselia)
Spoiler for Hiden: Story:
Spoiler for Hiden:
--- Quote from: vndb ---Yuuto has been taking care of his step-sister Kaori since the passing of both of their parents. Their life is hard, but they are happy together - at least until the day they are transported to a parallel world that they will later come to call Phantasmagoria...

In this world where he can't even understand a single spoken word, his sister is taken prisoner and her captors, calling him an 'Etranger', force him to fight wielding a sword that tries to control his mind instead...

Although he first accepts this fate only to protect Kaori, with passing time Yuuto starts to care for the fate of the 'spirits', the girls that fight alongside him, and other inhabitants of this world as well...

--- End quote ---

Description:
Spoiler for Hiden: Eien no Aselia is an SRPG, meaning that the normal VN parts alternate with turn-based strategy battles, in which you try do defeat the enemy and conquer cities on a world map. The battles themself are rather simple (Rock-Paper-Scissors -concept) and there's no luck involved in them. But that doesn't mean that they are easy. You've got parties of up to three with one support, one for defense and one for offense. There's different kinds (colours) of Spirits who get different abilities depending on which role they take, so it's really a very tactical game, and apart from subsequent playthroughs on the the same difficulty it can be pretty challenging.
My impression:
Spoiler for Hiden: The story is really good too. There's some story twists, in the subsequent plays for the different routes you get to know more and more about some of the character's past and the history of that world (Ophelia's story was really awesome, and Aselia's was very touching for example). I don't remember disliking any of the heroines, but there were some I liked more (Aselia, Uruka) than the others. Even the sidecharacters were well-made and thought-through.

The only part of the story that was a bit weak imo was the very beginning, the time till you arrive on the other world. That was mainly because I absolutely hate the main-characters rival though.

Apart from a very few exceptions (I remember one CG where the MCs sister looked really weird) the art is very beautiful, the one scene with Aselia at the sea (when you get there you'll know what I mean) was really breathtaking.
Be warned that this is not a light-hearted VN. Sure there are some comedic scenes, but all in all it's a drama. It's  about war and the main character being forced to fight, and there's also people dying.

If you're a fan of SRPG and/or turnbased strategy battles, like the fantasy setting and VNs in general you should really get this, especially considering how few SRPGs there are officially ported so far (and the quality of those...).

On a related note, in a cooperation between Jast and the translators from the Dakkodango forum the port of the 2nd part, Seinarukana, is scheduled for next year.

A final warning: There's an OVA of this, but do yourself a favour and don't watch it. While it's not exactly bad it's only two episodes and stops right in the middle when the story is about to start.

Castle Fantasia 2: The Sacred War Renewal
(Castle Fantasia ~Seima Taisen~ )

Daibanchou - Big Bang Age

Daiteikoku

Gadget Trial: Think Advance Wars with more visual novel parts and less complex game mechanics. I liked it a lot though, and the protagonist having the same voice as Kyon made it all the funnier for me.

Galaxy Angels: Sci-Fi visual novel with lots of starship combat missions. Surprisingly it has a very good story, the girls are very different, and overall it's not as zany as the anime. The routes for the different girls split up very late, so trying to get them all gives you a lot of repetition. All ages

Galaxy Angel - Moonlit Lovers: More or less the same as the first part, but you get a new girl in your crew. Again, the routes split rather late, and in this one the similar beginnings for the girls annoyed me a bit. Still, very good starship combat and the typical GA sense of humour.

Galaxy Angel - Eternal Lovers: Again, nothing really changed. The story itself is very good again, but I found the different routes to be too similar. Still, if you like Galaxy Angel and space combat you'll want to play this too.

Koihime Musou ~A Heart-Throbbing, Maidenly Romance of the Three Kingdoms~
(Koihime † Musou ~Doki ☆ Otome Darake no Sangokushi Engi~)

Piece of Wonder

Pretty Soldier Wars A.D. 2048
(Youjuu Senki A.D. 2048): PrettySci-Fi RPG Visual Novel. Lots of tactical battles with a nice round-based combatsystem. Beautiful (more or less) girls having to defeat tentacle-monsters... I pretty much laughed at the scenes, but that's also worth something. Pretty short with a rather abrupt ending. Officially translated. 18+. Holy cow, that thing is almost 20 years old already...

Princess Hunting Dungeon Master
(Himegari Dungeon Meister)

Princess Waltz: Somewhat similar to the better known Fate/Stay Night. Lots of cool battles and action scenes, good story with some twists. Several girls to choose from, the main storyline is linear though. Has a strategic card game to decide some of the fights, which takes a bit to get used too. I rather liked it though. 18+. Officially translated.

Sengoku Rance

Tears to Tiara: RPG-style VN with lots of RTS battles. Has no real choices or routes, but lots of different and cool characters. Good graphics, very good story, good combat-system. Weirdest way to mix up the Britannian and Christian mythology I've ever seen. Several difficulties and a new game+ mode . Completely (fan-) translated. 18+

Utawarerumono: RPG-style visual novel with lots of turn based battles. Has no real choices or routes, but the overall story and the characters are very good (bit mindfuck in the end though). Different difficulties and new game+ mode available. Nice graphics, good combat-system, good story. Completely (fan-) translated. 18.

RPG style visual novels:

Spoiler for Hiden: Aselia the Eternal: See the entry under "Strategy game - visual novels"
(Eien no Aselia)

Brave Soul: Fantasy RPG. Typical dungeon-crawl. Pretty old already and nothing extraordinary, but I sorta liked it. Combat-system is nothing extraordinary( point and click), but not bad. Has some VN-elements with various routes (some of them have to be unlocked) for the girls, resulting in different endings. Completely (fan-) translated. 18+

Castle Fantasia 2: The Sacred War Renewal: See the entry under "Strategy game - visual novels"
(Castle Fantasia ~Seima Taisen~ )

Farland Symphony: Your classic tactical RPG. More RPG than visual novel.

Lightning Warrior Raidy
(Ikazuchi no Senshi Raidi -Haja no Raikou-): Fantasy-RPG. Typical dungeon-crawl. Has loads of very nice, sexy monsters, and some yuri-moments. A very fun game. Officially translated, 18+.

Lightning Warrior Raidy II: ~Temple of Desire~
(Ikazuchi no Senshi Raidi 2 ~Jain no Shinden~): Same as the first part, if anything it has a bit more RPG elements.

Men at Work! 2 ~Hunter Academy e Youkoso~

Monster Girl Quest - Part 1
Monmusu Quest! Zenshou ~Makereba Youjo ni Okasareru~

Monster Girl Quest - Part 2
Monmusu Quest! Chuushou ~Makereba Youjo ni Okasareru~

Pretty Soldier Wars A.D. 2048: See the entry under "Strategy game - visual novels"
(Youjuu Senki A.D. 2048)

Princess Hunting Dungeon Master: See the entry under "Strategy game - visual novels"
(Himegari Dungeon Meister)

Sengoku Rance: See the entry under "Strategy game - visual novels"

Tears to Tiara: See the entry under "Strategy game - visual novels"

Utawarerumono : See the entry under "Strategy game - visual novels"

Zenith Chronicles: Western visual novel. Half VN and half side-scoll shooter. Has girl-magicians riding on a dragon. Several different routes based on the girls you choose and your morality. All-ages.

--- Quote from: Eos on February 20, 2012, 01:55:16 AM ---I have yet to see Clannad. I heard it is very sad.

--- End quote ---

It does have some really sad moments, as does probably every other visual novel by KEY. I think it's definitely worth it though, and the sweet moments outweigh the sad ones in the end.

--- Quote from: Xamdiz on February 20, 2012, 02:31:14 AM ---Sweet, I've been wondering for a while whether I should play Koihime Musou or not. Since you recommend it, I know it wouldn't be bad.

--- End quote ---

To be honest, there's some visual novels in this list that are pretty bad. Koihime Musou is not one of those though. But I don't think it was something really great either. The fights are not very challenging and straightforward rock-paper-scizzers. There were few memorable scenes, don't think there were any facepalm moments either. Ryofu was by far the highlight for me. :>
(this is only my personal opinion, so don't bash me for it if you think otherwise)

--- Quote from: Ikaros CORE on February 20, 2012, 06:34:59 AM ---Nothing by Overdrive on your list? I thought their works were pretty good.

--- End quote ---

Didn't play any of those yet, you're very welcome to write something about their games if you did play them already.

--- Quote from: dr. pepper on February 20, 2012, 10:08:28 AM ---The exclusion of The Devil on a G-String and Muv-Luv makes this a very unfinished list.

--- End quote ---

Again, I didn't play these yet and thus didn't want to write something about them. How about writing something up for them so that I can add them to the list, instead of complaining about them missing?

Edit: I'm too worn out to work on the list now, but please ask if you want to know more about any VNs. I'll make sure to write up my impressions on those first then.

Torugu:
Those are some very kage categories. Not like that is a bad thing, mind you.

In other news:

Mangagamer has just announced that together with the announced hardcopies Koihime Musou has "sold" more than 2000 copies, meaning that they'll be patching voices back into the game. Yay.

MG has also announced a license for Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru. Another high profile title, although it was released in 2004 and I fear it may not have aged well...

Hoshimemo has been 100% translated and is now in editing, release date for the patch is March the 18th. This is one gorgeous game with some of the best characters I've ever seen outside of Little Busters. If you're into key-style moe nakige and you don't give this at least a try I don't know how I can help you.

Kageryuu:
Going from what I play those categories made the most sense. If there'll be enough other VNs recommended other people I may make a new category, but so far I don't see the need for another one. So yes, I guess that makes these categories very "kage". :>

Nice to hear that Koihime sold this often. Hope Mangagamer will take this as a sign to insert the voice files from the start the next time (even if it wasn't too much trouble to do that myself).

And Hoshimemo is on my tp-play list already, once I get some free time again this will be the next one I play.

Torugu:
To be fair, they didn't actually sell 2000 copies - they sold about 1300 and then got Jlist to buy another 1000 hardcopies.

The real reason why I'm excited about it is because now we have a chance that they'll translate Shin at some point. And that game is supposed to be the reason why KM is such a successful merchandise.

Eos:
Sweet i'm going to watch this now thanks kage.  :D
