You need to use the key IF you purchased a physical copy, since that's how you're telling Blizzard you bought a copy.

If you purchased it digitally (or were given a Guest pass), you don't need to use a CD Key to get access to the download.

If you didn't buy it at all, I'm actually somewhat surprised you could download it (and surprised you did download it, given how pointless the client without an account is).

I've got a Monk on the NA Server, and a Demon Hunter on the EU Server. I'll make a Monk on the EU server sometime, and a Demon Hunter on the NA server another time. ^D
