Rewrite (the KEY visual novel)

(1/3) > >>

Kageryuu:
Edit: This post is just about my first impressions. A full review is a bit further down (or here if you're too lazy to scroll and search on your own). Might still be interesting to read the posts before that though, to see my reactions after playing certain parts of Rewrite.

Felt like making a thread for Rewrite, now that the first patch has been released.

Note: I tried to avoid reading spoilers as much as possible so far, and am doing my best in blocking out those I still came across (the wiki entry was pretty bad for example).
So I want to ask everyone to use the spoiler tags if they feel like they have to spoil anything, or better yet refrain from doing so in the first place.

For starters:
Spoiler for Hiden:

"Rewrite is set in the fictional city Kazamatsuri where treeplanting and afforestation have caused the city to become overgrown with trees and flowers in much the same way that other cities are filled by buildings. However, while most of the city appears to be rural, there are many traditional city elements as well. While set in a modern setting, the city also gives off a strange sense of nostalgia. The basis of the story is set in a high school setting. The first half of Rewrite primarily consists of the characters interacting in many everyday, enjoyable scenes. The latter half, however, is more serious, emotional, and carries a sense of mystery to the plot.

As indicated by the title, rewriting is the theme of the game's scenario. The tagline for the game is, "Could it possibly be rewritten, that fate of her's?"."

So, my impressions after playing the common route and Kotori's route up to how far the translation goes (actually went for Chihayas route first, then checked and saw that Kotori's will be translated first and started over again and playing up to how far the translation goes):
I can say without a doubt that Rewrite is the most captivating visual novel I've ever read.

The first few hours I've mostly spent laughing, with but a few "what the hell...?" moments. But then the story really picked up pace and it became so awesome and engrossing that I just couldn't stop reading on.
Comparing Rewrite to other KEY titles some similarities are obvious. The lighthearted and extremely  funny beginning with but a few hints of some drama and maybe a bit fantasy/mystery, with the drama really kicking in once you get to the different routes.

But the drama in Rewrite really is on a whole other level than in the other titles. Actually, "drama" doesn't come close to doing it justice, it's more like Rewrite turns into a mystery thriller (with a very strong eco undertone).

The basic personalities of the heroines are more or less generic (with the exception of Akane I'd say).
There's the going-at-her-own-pace childhood friend, the tsundere class-rep, the naive genki girl with an impossibly strong body, the small and shy cute little girl, and Akane, the ressourceful, nerdy and almost almighty boss.
Also the mystery girl, but she didn't appear much yet.
The VAs did a really good job, especially Kotori's is awesome (even made me overcome my initial dislike of her kind of character).

At least for me the heroines are all likeable so far, but I don't know too much about their backstories yet.
Chihaya is most interesting so far for me, going from my past experiences her route will probably be the last of the basic ones to get translated... ._.

Also noteworthy is the map system (mappy) Rewrite uses. Basically it's a normal map that sometimes shows up, where you click on certain points for events to happen. But there's also a lot of "hidden" points, which in praxis resulted in me moving the mouse cursor carefully about the whole map to find all those points. For me it was not yet on an annoying level, and even entertaining quite some times, but it still felt sorta suboptimal.

Another remarkable thing (at least for me) is also how often Rewrite breaks the fourth wall. This goes from the protagonist going like "you really want me to do that?" when you click on certain points on the map, to a guy who says that he's responsible for autosaving showing up in the protagonists dream and talking to him, and an explanation how a certain "quest" on Kotori's route is just a bonus of sorts, so that the lazy people don't neccessarily have to completely fulfil it.
My favourite one so far was a scene with a weird street magician where the protagonist was like "His wardrobe is so suspicious it can't be drawn, so we spared you a sprite for him".  ^D

So yeah, that's it for now, too tired to write anymore. Played for like 13 hours straight (including the restart at which I skipped most of the scenes), with only a short break to watch some football.

Rewrite's awesome, go read it!

Eos:
It's for sure the next VN im purchasing. By the way you make it sound amazing man.

GBolt:
So good. I'll be playing it for sure. Like, uh, the other VNs I have to play. But this one is in the priority list.

Kageryuu:
Definitely belongs high up in that priority list.  :>

Hm, anything I forgot in the first post...?  :eh?:

Maybe that it has all the typical KEY elements that are in all of their visual novels, like the cute/weird pet (a mini mammoth) and the funny/silly male sidekick (Yoshino).
And that I feel that it will be by far the most mindfuck of all their visual novels so far (I'm not even far in any of the basic routes yet, and it has already surpassed Little Buster's true route by far).

Also, this (I think I already posted it a long time ago, but w/e):
YO-SHI-NO

It even makes sense and totally fits in the scene where it plays, lol.

Kageryuu:
Next partial patch is out, covering all of the basic routes. Site seems to be down currently though, either they chose a terrible time for mainteneance or they're overloaded, lol...
