I never watched a horror movie, i'm very easy to frighten and i'm paranoid as fuck
You should play/read/watch Chaos;Head. Don't worry, it's not scary.

I show my mom one episode from six series in a row per day/week/whatever. It'll happen about 24-25 times before each series ends. I call it my Adult Swim. Almost always, every single one of them is very intriguing and satisfying. It's fun to sit down for two and a half hours and enjoy it. I talk about the shows I watch, especially the philosophies I learn from them, with my dad when I visit him.

People... around... me... can't enjoy fine stuff. They watch crappy soap operas the whole time. Even asking to watch something simple like an American show such as The Mentalist is too much of a problem. Meh, I just leave them be without understanding the superior games/anime/manga I play/watch/read. Or even the music I listen to.

Media only has negative things to say about otaku and anime/manga unfortunately so that never helps things.

People always takes samples from the extreme. North American media seems to project that Islam is an extremist religion; Homosexuals are all effeminate (They need to see some Gachimuchi); that gamers all just spend their lives inside the house, and never socialize. Yes, there are examples of these people in society, but this does not reflect the entirety of the community these examples belong to.

inb4 well, that was obvious.

Okay, I split this from the Steam group topic because I felt it warranted its own thread (and was also very off-topic there). Also because I wanted to reply to it but didn't want to keep the Steam thread derailed. New subject, if it isn't clear, is how your anime/TV/gaming/whatever tastes mix with those you know, such as family and friends. It is in the spam section, though, so that tangents aren't problematic.

Aaaaaaanyway.

My parents dislike anime overall. My dad refuses to listen to or watch anything that is in a different language, even with subtitles. Dubs don't help, as he thinks the only thing the Japanese are good at is copying what the western world does, which includes plots. As for my mom, she's fine with dubbed stuff, but doesn't like the "squeaky, high pitched anime voices" in subs (for reference, she thinks the Steins;Gate anime's main ED is squeaky).

My sister is neutral. She liked Madoka a bit, and Steins;Gate a bit more.

EDIT: if someone has a better topic title, GIVE IT TO ME.

My dad does his own thing. Shmeh
I got my mom to watch the Haruhi series, mostly because I wanted her to understand the awesomeness of the movie, and she enjoyed it.
My siblings are too young to understand anything.

Sadly, my friend that got me into this culture suffers heavily. Poor guy.  :'(

Darais,

My father and aunts are in agreement that everything animated is childish and targeted for children. Every time they saw me watching anime they'll say "Isn't it about time you give up those childish things?"

My mother who sees me more often than my other older family has a different opinion, "Geez, it's because you keep looking at those cute girls in your laptop that you never have a girlfriend. You told me that you're not interested in girls but spent a lot of times watching those cartoon girls. Just tell me the truth, you like those cartoon girls more than real girls right?"

She asked me that about 4 or 5 times already and each time I can only stay quiet. ._.

The mass media doesn't really care, but I've read an article that said that people who like to cosplay are people who can't differ between the pragmatic reality and their imagination and should grow up to be a better member of society. (Yes, he uses the term "pragmatic")

Other people around my age generally like manga, people like to read manga of all kind and not only the mainstream ones. But anime is different, people rarely watch non-mainstream series anime. (Anime movies are still common). There's no social exclusion or something for being an otaku though, unless you're being a prick and you don't have to be an otaku for that.

You should play/read/watch Chaos;Head. Don't worry, it's not scary.

Chaos;Head was an okay anime, but I am not sure if I kinda liked it because quite often...nevermind.

My dad probably would watch select series of anime if I guessed right. But I really don't want to bother making him like it. My mom can't handle any show with action anymore. So, all I could share with her are slice of life anime like stuff. My older brother is very overbearing so I dislike having any unneeded contact with him. He acts like anime is the only animation style that have over-sized eyes, (I am not calling anime a specific style) all anime for little kids are chibi, and all anime that are trying to have a mature plot (not xxx just "mature") look like Aeon Flux.
My older sister would have probably be the easiest for me to share anime with, but she isn't around anymore.

As for friends, I basically drifted away from all my non-online ones. (and the online ones are already willing to watch anime if they like the plot, though most of them only like dubs)

Though since my family are somewhat conservative Christians, I doubt I would want them to know I go to a site with.....*whispers*lolicons*whispers*

My parents are actually unusually neutral about anime or any cartoons in general. They do hold a higher opinion of anime than regular cartoon mostly because they're typically better drawn than their sample size of western cartoon, but overall they're really neutral about it.

It probably has to do with the fact that me and my brother enjoyed a lot of games with similar art styles growing up, and the general popularity of Doraemon and Kamen Rider being saturated everywhere growing up. And during me and my brother's time, they end up watching a lot of Dragonball with us. It's similarities with Journey to the West certainly helps, not to mention japanese media is HUGE where I'm from.

At the very least they don't hold the "all anime are stupid chinese cartoon porn" pov many people their age holds.

Accidentally deleted the old one in an experiment T_T
